A septic tank is considered to be full when 35 percent of the tank space is occupied by sludge. It is normal for the tank to be full of water, which is what you will see if you open the lid but it is recommended the sludge, which has settled at the bottom of the tank, is pumped out annually. If the tank is allowed to fill above 35 percent, there is a risk of the sludge entering the pipe to the drainage field which can result in problems and costly repairs.
